Diploma in Perioperative Theatre Technology

OVERVIEW:
This program prepares the learner to work as a valuable member of the surgical team. Theatre Technologists are also known as surgical Technologists, they assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons. The course entails preventing nosocomial infections, providing technical services to the theatre team, maintaining safety of patients and the theater team, caring for theatre instruments, and participating in provision of clinical services in the operation theatre and executing administrative and managerial responsibilities in a hospital with an operation theatre.

EXAMINATION BODIES:
Internal examinations are conducted by the Anglican Medical Training College- Maseno.
External examinations are conducted by the TVETA-CDACC.

COURSES DURATION:

  • Level 5 (Certificate Level)-4 trimester (One and half years).
  • Level 6(Diploma Level) -7 trimesters (Two and half years).

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the health services support course, students will be equipped with competencies necessary to:

  • Work in CSSD as sterilizing technician
  • Participate in Perioperative technical services
  • Manage Operation Theatre resources
  • Technologists serve as anesthetist assistants
  • Operating theatre machines and equipment
  • Support surgeons/nurses in clinical services in the hospital
  • Prepare the operating theatre room
  • Providing first aid services / CPR
  • Participate in health education, promotion services, and programs in the community
  • Undertake sales & marketing of operation theatre instruments/equipment

ADMISSION CRITERIA:
Diploma (level 6) – KCSE: Mean Grade C- (Minus) and above
Certificate (Level 5) -KCSE: Mean Grade D(Plain) and above
